The Shop Committee Reps, also known as Shop Stewards, act as the first line of defense against possible company abuse towards the employee(s). The Shop Committee Reps help to ensure the employee(s) is treated fairly, and in accordance with both the negotiated contract and company policies. The Reps and Rep Alternates cover specific areas and/or shifts, and are elected by those members in their respective work areas.
In addition to the regional Reps, is one Shop Committee Chair who heads the Shop Committees, and ensures the grievance procedure is handled in a fair and unbiased manner. The Shop Committee Chair pursues additional steps in the grievance procedure if necessary to ensure a fair and equitable outcome is achieved for the employee(s) with the company. This position is elected by the Local Union membership.
